Episode #020 - The Brew - Guest Kerryn Phelps - Part 1

Kerryn Phelps has long been the voice of those who can’t speak. As a revered medical practitioner, academic, advocate, councillor, author, media personality and small business owner, she has serviced the community continuously with her “people first” ethos.

Growing up in Sydney’s northern beaches, Kerryn was quickly drawn to sport. She would participate in almost any activity she could with a willing attitude that she believes has served her well across her adventurous life.

After graduating from medicine at UNSW, Phelps got her start as a medical practitioner at the Royal North Shore Hospital and then at the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners. She then took the leap to small business and became the owner of her own practice at the age of 27, and now owns practices in Mosman, Double Bay and Surry Hills.

In the years since, she has been a prominent media figure, spreading messages of good health and positive lifestyle. Phelps has appeared on EveryBody, Good Morning Australia, the Today Show, a documentary on the Kokoda Campaign and Last Chance Surgery, as well as being the subject of stories on 60 Minutes, Australian Story and This Is Your Life.

In 2011, Phelps was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to medicine and Australian society.

Recently, the 59-year-old has been in the public eye as a LGBTIQ spokesperson during the successful “Yes” same-sex marriage campaign. She featured heavily in television commercials and lent her public profile to the cause.

During her chat with Angela Vithoulkas on The Brew, Phelps spoke about remaining unashamedly herself despite the public spotlight, how she strives to value the contribution of everyone on her team and why she refuses to settle for staleness.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Phelps’ approach to providing a brilliant customer service experience;
  • The need to aim for higher ceilings, even in small business;
  • Why mentorship is not only helpful in business, but  necessary for success;
  • How trying more things will help you find your true passion; and
  • The importance of always challenging yourself, according to Phelps.
